Bloom's Taxonomy
Benjamin S Bloom and his
associates,in 1960s,classified the educational objectives in the book
titled,'Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: The Classification of
Educational Goals'. Taxonomy means 'classification' or
'categorisation'. According to this taxonomy the objectives of
education fall under three categories or domains: cognitive domain;
affective domain; psycho motor domain. Cognitive refers to the
intellectual skills; affective refers to feelings or emotional areas,
while psycho motor is for manual or physical skills.
Cognitive
Domain: Cognitive
domain is concerned with knowledge or thought.Bloom identified six
levels within the cognitive domain, from the simple recall or
recognition of facts,as the lowest level, through increasingly more
complex and abstract mental levels,to the highest order which is
classified as evaluation.
Knowledge
Understanding
Application
Analysis
Synthesis
Evaluation
Affective
Domain: Affective
domain is concerned with feelings or emotions.Educational objectives
classified under the affective domain are concerned with emotional
development of an individual. There are five categories under the
affective domain, arranged in a hierarchy with the lowest level being
receiving and the highest level being characterisation.
Receiving
Responding
Valuing
Organization
Characterisation
Psychomotor
Domain: Psychomotor
domain is concerned with the learning of physical skills, manipulative
ability and neuromuscular coordination. There are five categories
under the psychomotor domain, arranged in a hierarchy with the lowest
level being impulsion and the highest level being naturalisation.
Impulsion
Manipulation
Precision
Coordination
Naturalization
